We Wear The Mask: Passing in America

Brian Nelson, Worship Associate

Author and cultural historian M.G. Lord returns to Emerson to discuss the complex reality of passing in America. Whether passing occurs to gain safety, opportunity, or access, or whether it’s the involuntary result of others’ assumptions, people wrestle with this issue in striking ways. Ms. Lord will draw upon her essay, “Among the Heterosexuals,” which details her conflicted foray into questions of identity after the murder of her female lover, which was published Beacon Press’ new book, We Wear The Mask: 15 True Stories of Passing in America.
