Sacred Cinema:

Julie Borden, Worship Associate

We will be discussing this months Sacred Cinema movie, Breaking Away. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for 1979, Breaking Away is a coming-of-age story, a sports-underdog tale, and a portrait of class conflict between “town and gown” in a Midwestern college town.  Writer Steve Tesich, an immigrant from Serbia, grew up fully embracing the American dream while always remaining aware of the distance between dream and reality.  The thrilling cycling race sequences in Breaking Away celebrate this month’s worship theme of “Play,” but its larger portrait of four young men wrestling with their prospects reminds us of the struggles of working people to feel truly worthy and valued in American society.

This movie will be shown in the sanctuary on Friday, July 28th. Doors open at 7 PM with a 7:15 PM screening.  If you miss it, you can watch it for free on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU0dELpymQU
