“Liminality” is a word that comes from the Latin limen, meaning threshold. It describes those in-between moments — when we’re no longer who we were, but not yet who we’re becoming. These threshold times can feel unsettled, even a little disorienting: the ground shifts, and the future isn’t yet clear. We’re living through one of those moments right now. A new church year has begun, autumn is around the corner, and our community is saying both goodbyes and welcomes as staff members leave and return. How do we steady ourselves in this season of change? How do we navigate the stress of endings and beginnings, and even discover the gifts that only liminality can offer?
