New Religious Education blog, live on Emerson’s very own website!

Hello, and welcome to an experiment in blogging!  I’ll be posting updates about Religious Education at Emerson right here, and sharing news about upcoming events and opportunities in children, youth, and family ministry.

Below is a photo of some of my favorite kids at Emerson and myself.

We are affirming, as we do every Sunday,  that “we are Unitarian Universalists: a people of open minds, loving hearts, and welcoming hands.”

Sign up for family/elementary winter camp at de Benneville Pines!

“A Walk in the Woods”: Saturday, February 17 – Monday, February 19, 2018

Camp scholarships through the church are available for children of members; email me at to request a scholarship form.

Consider this amazing family adventure for your President’s Day weekend—it’s a GREAT price for an all-inclusive, fun-filled, spiritually rich weekend in the mountains (snow, sadly, not guaranteed—but definitely possible!)

“Soul Matters” Ministry theme for February: Perseverance

We’ll explore this month’s theme through the “slow and steady” moral of the Tortoise and the Hare; we’ll make Valentine’s cards to spread love; we’ll play some games that take a little trying; we’ll learn about the perseverance of Black Americans during the Civil Rights Movement; and in honor of the Jewish holiday of Purim we’ll learn the story of Queen Esther, and how she persisted against oppression and saved her people.

Upcoming Events for Teens:

PSWD Spring Con 2018!!

Both Eric Rosloff (new interim Con Coordinator)  and myself will be at this year’s PSWD Youth Con in Ventura. This will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura, March 2-4 2018.   Its description on UUA’s website reads: “We are committed to making Spring Con radically inclusive, spiritually deep, and religiously contagious. Most importantly, we are committed to making Con a physically and emotionally safe space for all youth. We will be following all District & Regional event health and safety policies/guidelines.”

Have you encouraged your youth to sign up yet? Here’s an incredible video by Tanner Linden and the PSWD Youth Board that outlines what to expect

To register:

Early Registration: $35, until February 17th. Late Registration: $45. Need more info? Go here! See you in Ventura! 🙂

Our Whole Lives, Comprehensive Sexual Health Education

The first quarter of the year brings a wealth of opportunities for our youth, including learning experiences and spiritual gathering places.   As an approved ‘Our Whole Lives’ facilitator for K-12th grade (who works with other OWL-trained UUs in the area to extend its reach thru “More Than Sex-Ed”), I am teaching a 7th and 8th grade class in Studio City on Sunday afternoons and I would love to invite any age-appropriate teen you know to come check it out!

Classes are also available in South Pasadena for 7th and 8th grade, and Redondo Beach for 4th and 5th grade.

Learn more about the UUA’s comprehensive sexual health education program, OUR WHOLE LIVES,  thru their website:

More Than Sex-Ed, a project of Community Partners, is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit founded by UUs and dedicated to bringing the empowering and life-changing OWL program to as many youth in Los Angeles as possible. Please visit our website, to learn more and sign up for classes!
