West Valley Pantry

Emerson UUC supports the West Valley Food Pantry at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church in four ways:

Collection
This group works in 2 hour shifts from 10:00am-4:00pm on the 2nd Saturday of each month at a local supermarket.

Disbursement
This group works two shifts Monday - Thursday: 10am-12:30pm and 12:30pm-3pm, and one shift on Friday from 10:00am-12:30 pm. Extra hands are always needed!

More about the Food Pantry

In contrast to some other food-based charities, the West Valley Food Pantry makes a specific effort to assure that the meals provide a balanced and nutritious diet. Thus, purchased food (mainly protein items) is an important component of the Pantry's service. To be eligible for food, every individual must show evidence of need (income under 150% of the U S Government guidelines) and proof of residency in the west valley. A recipient then receives a three day supply of food once in thirty days. (Homeless may apply weekly.)

About 35% of the food is derived from collection drives by the twelve coalition congregations, the U.S. Post Office, the Boy Scouts, and other supporting groups and individuals. Food donations are also received from local Lucky, Trader Joes and Vons markets, and other stores in the area. 65% of the food is purchased from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, wholesale and other low cost outlets with funds contributed by FEMA, the National Charity League, participating congregations, service clubs, benefits and other generous organizations and individuals. Recently, the federal Emergency Food And Shelter Program funding of $20,000 per year was suspended, leaving the Food Pantry in an uncertain position.

Each of the coalition congregations does contribute financially to the Food Pantry. The Emerson Board of Trustees is pleased to be able to join in these contributions.
