What is Start-Up Workshop Weekend, you ask? Well, it is a program developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association to facilitate the ministries of newly called ministers and their congregations. Emerson is pleased to participate in this relatively new program.

As part of welcoming Rev. Matthew to our shared ministry at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church, we will be having a Ministry Start-Up Workshop Weekend on October 21–22, 2016.

On Friday evening, October 21, the workshop is open to all members and active friends of our congregation, and we hope that as many of our congregation will join us as possible! We’ll gather for a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Pavilion/Sanctuary to share food and fellowship and then participate in a facilitated process until about 9:30 p.m.. So that we may plan for appropriate numbers of attendees, please RSVP to Lynne Masuhara or Bettina Salas. Childcare will be provided.

On Saturday morning, October 22, the Board and key committee leaders will meet with Rev. Matthew in a continued facilitated process.

The beginning of a new ministry is a time to begin with intention and clarity. The intent of the workshop weekend is to offer an experience that respects and honors the traditions of our congregation while also helping to free the congregation to make choices and not simply repeat our habits or assumptions from the past.

The main purposes of the startup workshop weekend are to:

* Help our congregation become more aware of our expectations, habits, and assumptions

* Help our new minister understand what those patterns and expectations are—particularly around authority and power

* Become very clear about the roles and responsibilities of the minister, congregation, and staff

* Establish a reasonable (and short) list of priorities for the first year of our shared ministry

Nancy Edmundson will facilitate the events of our Ministry Start-up weekend. Nancy is a member of the UUA Western Regional Transition Team, as a Transition Coach. She facilitated our 2014 Strategic Planning Workshop and is delighted to return to Emerson again! She has served the Pacific Southwest District in a variety of roles since 1991. As a member of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara (USSB) since 1990, she has enjoyed facilitating groups of children, youth, and adults in a number of USSB programs and roles. She has served as a religious professional as the Director of Administration for the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara for 10 years, and she has consulted with numerous congregations in a leadership development capacity and facilitated lay leadership development retreats.
